In the Fall of 2018, American artist Diana Tremaine was commissioned by Keeneland to paint retiring champion racehorse Lady Eli. Keeneland, recognized globally as the premier Thoroughbred auction house and a world-class race track, invited Tremaine to come meet the infamous Lady Eli and spend a week on their grounds in the Artist Cottage painting the superstar. The completed painting would be presented as a gift to her then owner Sol Kumin who would be selling her at Keeneland’s upcoming Breeding Stock Sale (Lady Eli ended up selling for $4,200,000.00). Tremaine worked tirelessly on the painting under extraordinary conditions – a photographer was often with her in the studio documenting the painting’s progress, she painted in the Keeneland Sales Pavillion on the stage where Lady Eli would soon be sold, and finished the painting at Churchill Downs during the 2018 Breeder’s Cup Championships. Upon viewing the completed painting for the first time at Churchill Downs, Kumin exclaimed “Oh my gosh, this makes me want to cry”. Following the success of the Lady Eli commission, Tremaine’s 2017 “Devotion” went on to sell at Keeneland’s prestigious annual Sporting Art Auction.
